1,750 Institutions a Part of the Global Climate Hub
The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) is an institution that mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development around the world.
Around 1,750 members of this global institution, including universities and research centers, have decided to contribute their expertise to a global climate hub set up earlier this year.
The Global Climate Hub was launched in July 2022, during a pre-COP27 event at the Academy of Athens in Greece. The Athens University of Economics and Business and the Athena Research and Innovation Center in Information Communication and Knowledge Technologies are the host institutions of this hub.
Phoebe Koundouri, a professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business and also the Chairperson of the UN SDSN, says, “The Global Climate Hub aims at identifying pathways for climate neutrality and resilience in a systematic context where there are multiple crises, from, for instance, the collapse of biodiversity as well as economic and geopolitical crises.”
She adds that the Hub is also focused on providing science-driven support to governments and relevant stakeholder groups across the world.
The climate hub will use extensive data, knowledge, and technologies provided by experts in various fields, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), to develop country-specific action plans to be adopted and reinforced through nine different units that stem from the SDGs.
These nine units include climate data platforms and digital applications, atmospheric physics and climatology, climate and energy modelling, climate and land use, water-food-energy biodiversity, nexus modeling, and climate and health.
The units also include innovation and acceleration for climate neutrality and resilience, not just transition.
The units will also integrate scholarly communication sources via artificial intelligence (AI). It will combine data from the global research ecosystems into indicators, which will be fed into the Open Science Observatory.
