Analysts at the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air report that coal-generated electricity dropped by 1.6% in China and 3% in India last year. This change is attributed to a rapid expansion of clean energy projects, which have successfully met the increasing energy demands of both countries.

The simultaneous decrease in coal usage in these two nations is unprecedented since 1973. As the largest contributors to global carbon emissions, the decline in coal power generation could lead to a notable decrease in worldwide emissions. The research highlights that last year, China installed over 300 gigawatts of solar power and 100 gigawatts of wind power, setting new records not just for China but for any country globally. India, on the other hand, added 35 gigawatts of solar, 6 gigawatts of wind, and 3.5 gigawatts of hydropower, marking a pivotal moment in its energy transition.

Despite the optimistic figures, the report indicates that a portion of the reduction in coal power was influenced by external factors. In India, for example, about 36% of the drop in fossil fuel usage was due to milder weather conditions, while 20% was a result of slower demand growth. This raises concerns that extreme weather, such as severe summer heat, could reverse these gains by increasing energy demand for cooling.
