IIT Madras Introduces Semester-Long Internships for BTech Students
IIT Madras has revised its curriculum to allow BTech students to take semester-long internships, providing them with valuable industry exposure.
Chennai, India — IIT Madras is reshaping the academic experience for its BTech students by allowing them to undertake semester-long internships. This significant change comes as part of a revised curriculum framework aimed at enhancing industry exposure and practical learning opportunities for students. Starting from the 2024 academic year, students can opt for internships during their sixth semester, which will be largely free from regular classroom instruction.
This initiative is designed to address the challenges faced by students in securing internships, particularly international ones, that often clash with the traditional academic calendar. Professor Prathap Haridoss, dean of academic courses at IIT Madras, emphasized that the new structure aims to provide students with greater flexibility in pursuing internships and other professional engagements.
The revised curriculum reduces the minimum credit requirement per semester from 66 to 50 credits, relieving academic pressure on students. This change allows them to focus more on gaining practical experience without compromising their academic performance. The sixth semester will include only four elective courses, enabling students to balance their course load effectively.
Why IIT Madras Is Emphasizing Internships Now
The move to allow semester-long internships reflects a growing recognition of the importance of practical experience in education. With rapid advancements in technology and changing job market needs, academic institutions are increasingly aligning their curricula with industry requirements. This shift is crucial for students who need to be job-ready upon graduation.
