Chennai, India — IIT Madras is reshaping the academic experience for its BTech students by allowing them to undertake semester-long internships. Starting from the 2024 academic year, students can opt for internships during their sixth semester, which will be largely free from regular classroom instruction.

Professor Prathap Haridoss, dean of academic courses at IIT Madras, emphasized that the new structure aims to provide students with greater flexibility in pursuing internships and other professional engagements.

The revised curriculum reduces the minimum credit requirement per semester from 66 to 50 credits, relieving academic pressure on students. This change allows them to focus more on gaining practical experience without compromising their academic performance.
