Lucknow University’s PhD Admissions Overhaul
Lucknow University’s academic council has approved the ‘PhD Ordinance 2026’. This new ordinance allows the university to conduct PhD admissions twice a year, in May and December. The ordinance aims to provide flexibility, transparency, and global research opportunities while ensuring the career security of scholars.
The New PhD Ordinance 2026
The PhD Ordinance 2026 brings significant changes to the existing PhD admission process. Under the new ordinance, candidates who have completed a four-year undergraduate course will be eligible to pursue a PhD. The university will give preference to those who have qualified national level fellowships, doctoral courses, and cleared eligibility tests conducted by various higher education bodies. These candidates can directly appear in interviews for admissions.
Eligibility and Selection Process
The admission process will have three phases. In the first and second phases, the university will give preference to candidates with national level fellowships, doctoral courses, and eligibility tests. The university will conduct a Research Entrance Test (RET) for those candidates who do not fall under the first two phases. This entrance test allows candidates without national fellowships or NET to compete fairly for the remaining seats.

PhD Admissions Twice a Year
With the new ordinance, Lucknow University aims to increase the velocity of PhD admissions. This shift is expected to improve the university’s research rankings. According to Vice-chancellor JP Sainis, “The PhD Ordinance 2026 is a step forward in providing flexibility, transparency, and global research opportunities while ensuring the career security of our scholars.”
