Nothing OS 5.0 Expands to More Nothing Phones

The update adds a dedicated Glyph app, Essential Apps Builder and new home-screen tools. Rollout timing and eligibility depend on the phone model.

Nothing is expanding the stable Nothing OS 5.0 rollout, based on Android 17, to more phones. The schedule covers several models through mid-January 2027 and excludes three older phones.

The Stable Rollout Covers More Phone Models

The expansion brings Nothing OS 5.0 to the Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro and Phone (3a). The stable release first reached the Nothing Phone (3) in October 2026. Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17, and the rollout is moving through the company’s phone range rather than arriving on every eligible model at once.¹²³⁴

The schedule places the Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus by mid-November. The Phone (3a) Lite is listed for late December 2026, followed by the Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro in mid-January 2027. These dates distinguish the later stages of the stable rollout from the early-November expansion to the four models named above.¹³

The Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 are excluded. They have reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0. That makes the model name the key eligibility check: the update schedule covers newer devices, while those three phones are outside the supported group for this Android 17-based release.¹²³⁴

Check for the Update in System Settings

Users with eligible phones can check for the stable update by opening Settings, choosing System, then System update, and selecting the option to check for updates. The check is done on the phone itself. The rollout schedule remains model-specific, so an eligible phone may have a different arrival window from another device in the Nothing range.¹²³⁴

Nothing unveiled OS 5.0 on August twenty-fifth through a YouTube livestream. The Phone (3) was first in line for the Open Beta, which started on August twenty-sixth. The Phone (4a) Pro beta began on September eleventh, and the Phone (4a), Phone (3a) and Phone (3a) Pro beta began on September twenty-third. Those beta dates preceded the stable rollout schedule.¹²³⁴

Glyph and Home-Screen Features Add New Controls

The update introduces the Geist typeface and refreshed icons, alongside two lock-screen clock styles. Gooey uses a playful design, while Micrographics presents information in a hardware-inspired layout. The Lucent theme adds translucency to home-screen widgets, and an optional redesigned home screen brings transparent widgets and a transparent search bar.¹²⁴

A dedicated Glyph app gathers settings and controls for the Glyph Interface in one place. The Glyph Timer adds a direct route to starting a countdown from the home screen. The update also enables audio capture from the Ear (3) case using SuperMic, giving that accessory a specific role in the new software’s audio features.¹²³⁴

Home-screen batch editing lets users move several apps and widgets together instead of rearranging each item individually. The software also lets users select multiple apps and drag them to another location or home-screen page. Collector turns photos into stickers for visual collections on the home screen, while Away Time tracks how long users stay away from their phones.¹²⁴

Essential Space, Nothing’s AI-powered information hub, gains Smart Collections. The feature groups related screenshots and saved content automatically. Essential Voice supports transcription in more than one hundred languages. Essential Apps Builder takes a different approach: users describe an app in natural language, then create a tool directly on their phone without writing code.¹²³⁴

Notifications and Quick Settings now occupy separate spaces. Swiping from the top-left side of the status bar opens notifications, while the right side opens Quick Settings toggles. The update also adds an improved Quick Share experience and enhanced privacy indicators. An adaptive colour system can take colours from a user’s wallpaper and apply them to app icons, widgets and selected Quick Settings elements.¹²⁴

Quick Share can create a QR code for file sharing with iPhone users and other nearby devices. Recipients can download shared files through a secure web link, and cross-platform sharing does not require an additional app. Other additions include Noto 3D emoji, expanded Dark Theme support, improved screen recording and a redesigned Recents screen.¹⁴

Check Your Phone's Update Eligibility

Before buying a second-hand Nothing phone, check the model name against the update schedule. The Phone (1), Phone (2), and CMF Phone 1 are excluded from Nothing OS 5.0 because they reached the end of major software support. A used Phone (4a) or Phone (3a) still receives the Android 17-based update, but an older model does not. This makes the model name the deciding factor in how long the device stays current.¹²³⁴

If you own an eligible phone, the rollout is staged by model. The Phone (4a) Pro and Phone (3a) get the update in early November, while the Phone (2a) arrives by mid-November and the Phone (3a) Lite in late December. If your phone is not in the first wave, wait for the model-specific window rather than expecting an immediate update. The check path is Settings, System, then System update.¹²³⁴
