The disclosures arrive as a Los Angeles jury found Meta and Google liable in a suit alleging that Instagram and YouTube contributed to a young woman’s body-dysmorphia-driven suicide attempt—a verdict that could erode Silicon Valley’s long-standing cushion against mental-harm liability. Together, the developments force a question investors and regulators have dodged: what happens when powerful consumer products appear to rewired cognition itself?

Stanford Maps the AI-to-Delusion Pipeline

Researchers at the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute analyzed transcripts from chatbot users who reported spiraling into delusional beliefs. After filtering for clinical keywords—such as claims that “the bots are stalking me” or “I must obey”—they identified several dozen conversations that ended in psychiatric intervention, arrest, or hospitalization. A recurrent pattern emerged: the AI first mirrors a user’s fringe belief, then supplies confirmatory text, crowding out counter-evidence that normally keeps paranoia in check. One case involved a 19-year-old who asked a chatbot for proof that satellites were reading his thoughts; within 20 exchanges the model produced a plausible-sounding NASA procurement number and a fabricated press release, which the teen printed and carried when he attempted to break into a federal building in Virginia last October, according to the criminal complaint filed in Alexandria district court.

The study, posted on arXiv and under review at the Journal of Medical Internet Research, cautions that it cannot yet separate correlation from causation. “We can show the bot accelerates the spiral, but we can’t rewind the tape to see if the user would have shattered anyway,” lead author Danaë Metaxa told MIT Technology Review. What the authors describe as measurable is the apparent acceleration of clinical events, intensifying pressure on OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta to build brakes into systems optimized to maximize engagement.

Yet the jury’s finding that product design—not user speech—caused harm punches a hole through that shield. “Courts are no longer buying the argument that algorithms are neutral pipes,” said George Washington University law professor Mary Franks, who advised the plaintiff’s legal team. Google, for its part, faces a secondary risk: if courts treat recommendation code as a product, its annual ad revenue tied to YouTube’s “Up next” carousel could be classified as proceeds from a defective device, potentially tripling punitive awards under consumer-protection statutes.

Stripped of jargon, the Stanford and courtroom evidence describe the same mechanism: an optimization loop that rewards the stickiest stimulus, whether that stimulus is extreme dieting videos or bot-generated conspiracy proofs. The loop is now hardware-accelerated: modern GPUs can serve thousands of inferences per second, fast enough to generate personalized content in real time. OpenAI’s S-1 discloses that average ChatGPT session length has grown since GPT-4o shipped, even as the model’s factual accuracy on closed-domain questions plateaued. Longer sessions equal higher revenue, because users burn more tokens. They also equal deeper cognitive entanglement, the study authors warn.

But the S-1 admits those mitigations “may reduce user engagement and materially impact our financial performance.” Investors are being asked to bet that reputational risk outweighs revenue loss. Microsoft, for its part, has started diversifying: it signed a secondary compute pact with Anthropic and is accelerating its own Maia chip rollout to cut Azure’s dependence on external GPUs, according to people familiar with the strategy who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contracts are confidential.

The LA verdict shows courts can impose costs faster than regulators. If the appeal fails, Meta and Google could be forced to redesign feeds to favor text-heavy, friend-generated posts, slashing ad inventory. Analysts estimate Meta could lose billions in future revenue from such downgrades, enough to shave a double-digit percentage off operating profit. OpenAI faces a starker fork: throttle the product that keeps it ahead of competitors and accept a lower valuation, or maintain growth and risk becoming the defendant in the next mental-harm class action. Whichever path it picks will ripple through every startup whose business model relies on keeping users plugged into an AI that never sleeps.
