Expedia CEO Says AI Agents Have yet to Change Booking Habits

Expedia is putting its prices and content into Meta Muse, while reporting AI-agent gains in customer support and activity bookings.

Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said Thursday that AI agents have not yet changed how customers book travel. She called them useful for inspiration and trip planning. Her comments came as personal AI agents such as Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots entered the mainstream.

AI traffic is high-intent but still limited

Expedia is receiving high-intent but limited traffic from AI agents, and CEO Ariane Gorin said their strongest use is discovery. That describes a role in helping travelers find ideas and plan, rather than evidence that the tools have changed booking behavior. The CEO also said people still want to book with a trusted brand where they know they will be taken care of if something goes wrong.¹²³

The CEO acknowledged that AI agents could develop their own travel programs and eventually claim market share. At the same time, she said complexities in travel, including customer service, would be difficult to replace fully with artificial intelligence. The comments point to two different parts of a trip: agents can help with discovery, while travelers may still value a company that can handle service when something goes wrong.¹²³

Expedia is connecting its inventory to AI tools

Expedia is working with AI agents so it appears in AI results. The company partnered with Google in AI Mode and announced an integration with Meta Muse. Muse gets access to Expedia prices and content. A traveler using it can complete a booking there or be sent to Expedia. That gives the agent a route from trip research to purchase while keeping Expedia involved in the transaction.¹²³

Third-party data shows Expedia leading in citation share in the United States. A citation share measures how often a company appears in AI answers, rather than how many bookings those answers generate. Expedia is also testing OpenAI's new ad products. The company is therefore working on visibility in AI results and paid advertising within AI products, even as the traffic it receives from agents remains limited.¹²³

Expedia is testing agents in service and trip planning

Expedia said its agentic voice experience on Vrbo resolved over 15% of inbound contacts in its first two months. Gorin said the tool raised satisfaction scores at a lower cost. The example puts AI to work on customer service rather than only on trip searches: the voice agent handled a share of incoming contacts, while the company reported both a service measure and a cost benefit.¹²³

A small team built an autonomous hotel onboarding agent in less than a quarter, work that the CEO said had once taken multiple quarters and many more people. Travelers who used Expedia's new activity agent were twice as likely to book an activity within seven days. Qantas became the first partner to use Expedia's new agentic template, extending the work beyond the company's own services.¹²³

Fourth-quarter guidance fell below analyst expectations

Expedia forecast fourth-quarter revenue between $3.69 billion and $3.75 billion. The midpoint came in below analyst estimates of $3.74 billion. Shares fell about 12% on Thursday after Expedia delivered weaker-than-expected guidance on Wednesday. The forecast put the company's near-term outlook below the comparison analysts were using, despite the company's separate progress on AI integrations and service tools.¹²³

The CEO attributed the moderation in guidance to geopolitical events in the Middle East and Europe, the midterm elections, and Expedia moving its fall sale from the fourth quarter to the third. She also pointed to a strong third quarter, when gross bookings rose 11% and revenue climbed 12%. The company linked its softer outlook to those market and timing factors, rather than to a change in customer booking habits from AI agents.¹²³

Expedia's advertising growth slowed to 7% from 13% in the prior quarter. CFO Derek Andersen said the company is making product changes to give advertisers better campaign tools and lay the groundwork for AI-enabled ones. That work adds an advertising track to the company's AI efforts, alongside agent integrations, customer service tools and trip-planning features.¹²³

AI Agents Shift Roles, Not Bookings

If you are weighing a role in travel or online commerce, the ledger shows AI agents currently drive discovery, not transactions. Expedia sees high-intent but limited agent traffic, and Booking Holdings reports LLM traffic below 1% of room nights. That means skills in AI-assisted trip planning, content optimization for AI answers, and integration work with agents like Muse or ChatGPT remain more valuable than betting on agents replacing booking systems soon.¹²³

For pay and risk planning, note that Expedia's advertising growth slowed to 7% from 13%, and its fourth-quarter guidance fell below analyst estimates, sending shares down about 12%. The company is investing in AI ad products and agentic service tools, like the Vrbo voice agent that resolved over 15% of contacts. If you work in travel marketing or customer service, expect more demand for AI-enabled campaign tools and service automation, while also planning for volatility tied to geopolitical events and booking timing shifts.¹²³
