IGNOU Expands Skill-Based and Online Course Offerings

IGNOU is expanding its skill-based and online courses, aligning with NEP-2020 reforms to boost employability and learning flexibility.
Bengaluru, India — The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is embarking on an ambitious expansion of its skill-based and online course offerings. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 reforms aimed at enhancing the employability of students in a rapidly changing job market. With the introduction of four new short-term skill-based courses, including yoga and beekeeping, IGNOU is responding to the demand for practical skills that can directly translate into job opportunities.
Kasturi Pesala, deputy director of IGNOU’s regional centre in Bengaluru, announced the plans during a recent visit to one of the university’s study centres. Currently, IGNOU offers 325 Open and Distance Learning (ODL) undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, alongside 45 online courses. The university is gradually updating these offerings to meet the standards set by NEP-2020, which emphasizes skill development and vocational training.
This expansion comes at a time when traditional education pathways are being reassessed. Many students are seeking alternatives that provide practical skills and direct pathways to employment. The new courses are designed to meet this need, providing students with the tools they require to thrive in today’s job market.
New Opportunities for Students Across India
IGNOU’s expansion of skill-based courses is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it addresses the skills gap that many employers are currently facing. According to a report by the World Economic Forum, nearly 85 million jobs may be displaced by a shift in labor between humans and machines by 2025. This shift emphasizes the need for workers to acquire new skills, particularly in technology and vocational fields.

Moreover, the introduction of courses like yoga and beekeeping highlights IGNOU’s commitment to diversifying its curriculum. These courses not only cater to niche markets but also promote sustainable practices and wellness, which are increasingly important in today’s society. By offering such courses, IGNOU is positioning itself as a leader in innovative education that meets contemporary societal needs.
Currently, IGNOU has about 7,500 students enrolled across 57 study centres in Karnataka, with a notable number of female students. The most popular programmes include Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), and Bachelor of Arts (BA). These trends indicate a strong demand for courses that not only provide academic knowledge but also practical skills that enhance employability.

Enhancing Career Prospects Through Skill Development
For students considering enrolling in IGNOU’s new skill-based courses, it is crucial to understand how these offerings can impact their career trajectories. The focus on practical skills means that graduates will be better equipped to meet the demands of employers. This shift is particularly relevant for entry-level positions where employers often prioritize skills over formal qualifications.
Mid-career professionals looking to pivot or enhance their skills will also find value in these new offerings. With industries evolving rapidly, continuous learning is essential. IGNOU’s flexible online courses allow professionals to upskill while managing their current job responsibilities.

Furthermore, individuals looking to switch careers can benefit significantly from the new skill-based courses. For example, someone with a background in traditional education might find a new passion for beekeeping or wellness through yoga. These courses provide a low-barrier entry point for those seeking to transition into new fields.

However, some experts caution that while the expansion of skill-based courses is a positive step, it may not be a complete solution to the skills gap. According to a recent study by the National Skill Development Corporation, many graduates still lack the foundational skills that employers seek. Therefore, while skill-based courses are beneficial, they should be complemented with traditional education and training.
The Future of Skill-Based Education in India

The integration of skill-based courses into traditional education frameworks signifies a shift towards a more holistic approach to learning. As more universities adopt similar models, students will have greater access to diverse educational opportunities that cater to their individual career aspirations.
