Jaipur, India — India’s Power Ministry has announced a significant milestone in the country’s energy infrastructure. The national power transmission network has surpassed 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines rated at 220 kilovolt (kV) and above. This achievement marks a 71.6% growth since April 2014, underscoring the country’s commitment to expanding its energy capabilities.
The milestone was reached with the commissioning of a new 628 ckm transmission line from Bhadla II to Sikar II substation, which was completed on January 14, 2026. This line is crucial for evacuating renewable energy generated in the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone, highlighting the government’s focus on integrating renewable sources into the national grid.
According to the Power Ministry, the network now includes 1,407 giga volt ampere (GVA) of transformation capacity. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance grid reliability and improve power evacuation capabilities across the nation. The ongoing Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) projects are expected to add another 40,000 ckm of transmission lines and 399 GVA of transformation capacity, primarily aimed at supporting renewable energy evacuation.
