NHAI Opens Summer Internships, Rs 20k Stipend

On 26 March 2026 the National Highways Authority of India released its Summer Internship Programme. The programme offers paid slots for undergraduates and post-graduates across the country. Applications opened at internshipsatnhai.digitalindiacorporation.in. They will stay live until 15 April. Selected students will spend two months in NHAI field offices or its headquarters. They will work on live highway projects. They will also take home Rs 20,000 a month plus a completion certificate.

This move marks a shift in how India’s road-building agency sources junior talent. Instead of waiting for fresh graduates to apply, NHAI is now reaching out to students while they are still in college. For students who have seen private tech firms cut internship budgets, this public-sector offer is a rare alternative to corporate stipends.

Why Civil-engineering Seats Fill Fast

The programme places interns directly under divisional engineers. These engineers oversee design, traffic planning, and construction supervision on national highway projects. Students who complete the internship gain practical exposure to large-scale highway development.

“NHAI used to rely on state public-works departments for junior engineers,” says Prof. Arun Kumar of IIT Delhi’s transport-engineering group. He helped frame the internship curriculum with the All India Council for Technical Education. “Now it is grooming its own pipeline.”

Non-Engineering Tracks Lure Data, Finance and Law Students

The same rush for internships is spilling into other fields. Computer-science and IT applicants support toll-plaza analytics. Finance and commerce majors assist in auditing toll-related accounts. Law interns help draft concession agreements for upcoming expressway bundles.

“Highway monetisation is as much about spreadsheets and contracts as it is about concrete,” says NHAI member Prakash Kumar. He cites the authority’s recent switch from build-operate-transfer to the toll-operate-transfer model. This change requires deeper due-diligence skills.

What Screens Out Many Applicants

The biggest filter is documentation. Applicants must upload a statement of purpose. They also need a no-objection certificate from their college. They must prove they can report to the assigned field office within seven days of selection. Students who list realistic location preferences move up the queue.

Portal traffic peaks late at night. Server crashes are common in the final 48 hours. Applying before 5 April avoids congestion. Candidates also get time to fix upload errors. Late corrections are not accepted.
