UGC Opens Applications for Distance Learning Programs for 2027 Session

Institutions can apply between September 1 and September 15 for the January-February 2027 session, with documents due by September 25.

The University Grants Commission has opened applications for higher education institutions to offer Open and Distance Learning programs for the January-February 2027 session. Institutions can apply between September 1 and September 15, according to the UGC notice released on August 31.

Application Process for January-February 2027

The notice was signed by Sudeep Singh Jain, Secretary, UGC, on August 31. All submissions must be made online through the UGC Distance Education Bureau portal. Documents must be delivered to the Joint Secretary, Distance Education Bureau, UGC, at 35 Feroze Shah Road, New Delhi, no later than September 25.1234

Submitting the application does not automatically secure approval, according to the UGC. Recognition will be provided only after scrutiny of the institution's eligibility, infrastructure, academic standards and compliance with regulations. Institutions must have qualified teachers, proper infrastructure, study material, and the required technology support to be approved.1234

All submissions must be made online through the UGC Distance Education Bureau portal.

August 2026 Application Cycle

The UGC also invited fresh applications from eligible higher educational institutions for ODL and online programs for the academic year 2026-27, with courses beginning in August 2026. The application window for this cycle is April 27, 2026 to May 11, 2026. The last date for submission of original affidavit and annexures is May 20, 2026.1234

Applications will be examined as per the provisions of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, along with subsequent amendments. Fresh online applications are being invited under Regulation 3(A) and Regulation 3(B)(b) of these regulations. Some institutions that are already eligible to offer online or distance education courses can apply at any time during the year through the DEB portal. The official UGC DEB website is deb.ugc.ac.in.1234

Jamia Millia Islamia Expands Distance Courses

Jamia Millia Islamia's Centre for Distance and Online Education has added 11 new certificate and diploma courses for the 2026-27 academic year, taking the total number of programmes offered by the centre to 60. The newly launched courses include certificate programmes in French, Spanish, Chinese, Persian, Arabic and Russian, along with programmes focused on photography and video editing, anchoring and broadcast presentation, and Indian Knowledge Systems.1234

CDOE has also introduced a Diploma in Artificial Intelligence and Digital Media and an Advanced Diploma in Conflict Analysis and Peace Building. The university extended the admission application deadline for all programmes until September 8, from the earlier deadline of August 10. The decision was made following requests from prospective applicants, with the recommendation made by CDOE Director Aslam Khan.1234

Verify recognition before enrolling

Before choosing a distance or online program, confirm the institution holds UGC recognition, since submitting an application does not guarantee approval and recognition follows scrutiny of eligibility, infrastructure, academic standards, and compliance. Jamia Millia Islamia now offers 60 programs, including new certificates in French, Spanish, Chinese, Persian, Arabic, and Russian, plus photography and video editing, anchoring and broadcast presentation, and Indian Knowledge Systems. These additions signal demand for language and media skills that you can weigh against your own career goals.1234

For skill building, consider the new Diploma in Artificial Intelligence and Digital Media, which pairs technical and creative competencies, or the Advanced Diploma in Conflict Analysis and Peace Building for roles in policy or international work. The admission deadline for all Jamia programs is extended to September 8, giving you time to apply. Also note that institutions already eligible to offer online or distance courses can apply year-round, so the range of recognized programs may grow, but always check the official DEB portal at deb.ugc.ac.in for current approvals.1234
