About the April 2022 issue

The April 2022 issue of Career Ahead features Odafe Oweh, a professional American football player and philanthropist, as its cover story. The article examines his journey from embracing his cultural roots to playing professional football. Raised in a first-generation Nigerian household in New Jersey, Oweh and his brothers grew up with an Urhobo tribal affiliation from their father’s side and Igbo heritage from their mother’s side. His parents, Henry, a businessman, and Tania, an attorney, did well in life and gave their children the advantages of a more affluent neighborhood, though the boys grew up in a largely Caucasian community. Oweh sought belonging in a less-advantaged neighboring community, where he played sports. Recognizing that many of his friends on the basketball court lacked access to quality education and opportunities, he wanted early on to bridge that gap. The article also describes how he bridged his Nigerian heritage and life in mainstream American society.

The issue also includes a Q&A with Ambassador Akhilesh Mishra, an Indian Foreign Service officer with more than three decades of experience who serves as India’s Ambassador to Ireland. Originally from Varanasi, he has a keen interest in Indian culture, especially Sanskrit Vedic and classical literature, Hindi and Urdu poetry, spirituality, yoga, and meditation. He has served in Indian diplomatic missions in Peru, Italy, Nepal, the United States, Tanzania, Afghanistan, and the Maldives, as well as at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. In conversation with Akhil Backliwal, he discusses diplomacy and the Indian Civil Services, describing the Ambassador’s role in representing India and promoting bilateral ties in areas such as trade, technology, and education. He also speaks about his duty to guide and mentor younger people.

Beyond these features, the April 2022 edition presents articles on Information Technology, Human Resources, Media, Entrepreneurship, and Law.
