The Indian government has taken a significant step in its semiconductor initiative by approving two new semiconductor units in Gujarat, with a total investment of ₹3,936 crore. This decision, announced on May 6, 2026, completes the initial phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 1.0), which aims to create a strong semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these facilities will enhance India’s position in the global semiconductor market. The units will focus on manufacturing gallium nitride (GaN) wafers for advanced display technologies, including Mini and MicroLED displays, marking a shift from traditional LCD manufacturing.

The ₹3,936 crore investment is part of a larger ₹76,000 crore allocation for the India Semiconductor Mission.
