Delhi University to Work from 8am to 8pm
Delhi University is one of the biggest and most prestigious institutions in India. The Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, Yogesh Singh, said at an event that they are contemplating extending the working hours in all their colleges from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
He says that at present, this is the only way to expand the number of seats in the university. In the words of Singh, by increasing the teaching hours in colleges, they will be able to accommodate a large number of sections for a particular program.
He also added that despite the new teaching hours there will be no change in the normal office timings.
The Vice-Chancellor believes that good institutions should always work for 12 hours, that is, from 8am to 8pm.
According to him working this way will allow them to admit more batches of students easily. At present the teaching faculty at the Delhi University works from 8 in the morning to 5 in the evening and Singh believes that they can easily work for three more hours.
“We don’t need additional infrastructure for this. It is easily possible and doable. It’s a low hanging fruit. We have teachers but if an additional course is assigned to a teacher, then we can pay and additional amount for that course,” Singh adds.
About increasing the number of seats for admission in Delhi university, Yogesh Singh says that he is a supporter of expansion and will create new institutions in Delhi. However, we should create more facilities and infrastructure in the existing institutions instead as it is easy to implement.
The classroom and labs will start at 8am and close at 8pm so that more children can be accommodated in the institution at the same time.
The admission rate at Delhi University, at present, is 70,000 seats in undergraduate courses every year. With the new teaching hours, more batches of students can be admitted.
Singh says that they are planning to implement these extended hours from the next academic year at least for a few colleges.
