Chennai Colleges Integrate AI into Degree Programmes

Chennai colleges are set to integrate AI into their degree programmes, marking a significant shift in educational focus towards technology and skill development.

Chennai, India — Colleges in Chennai are taking a significant step towards modernizing their academic offerings by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their degree programmes. This initiative comes at a time when AI technologies are rapidly transforming industries and creating new job opportunities. With generative AI tools capturing the interest of students, educational institutions are recognizing the need to equip graduates with relevant skills. The integration of AI into the curriculum is not just a trend; it is a response to the demands of the job market and the evolving landscape of technology.

Ethiraj College for Women is at the forefront of this movement, planning to establish a centralized AI lab to provide students with hands-on experience in AI-related skills. Principal S Uma Gowrie stated, “We are planning to establish a new lab with AI tools and software needed for AI. This lab will be in addition to existing labs for computer science students.” This initiative aims to enhance learning and prepare students for careers in AI, a field that is increasingly in demand.

In addition to establishing an AI lab, Ethiraj College is also revising course names to reflect this new focus. The BSc Computer Science course will be renamed to BSc Computer Science with AI, while the BSc Visual Communication course will be updated to BSc Visual Communication with AI. This change signifies a shift in educational priorities, emphasizing the importance of AI in various fields.

Why Chennai Colleges Are Embracing AI

The push to integrate AI into degree programmes is not limited to Ethiraj College. Women’s Christian College (WCC) is also planning to offer AI and robotics as an add-on course for all students starting next academic year. Principal Lillian Jasper mentioned that the college aims to collaborate with partner institutions in the US to provide both online and offline courses in AI and robotics. This collaborative approach not only enhances learning but also broadens students’ exposure to global educational practices.

Principal Paul Wilson explained that around 25% to 30% of the syllabus will now include computer science-related topics. This integration highlights the interdisciplinary nature of modern education, where technical skills are becoming essential across various fields.
