On a March afternoon, AI systems detected what appeared to be smoke in Arizona’s Coconino National Forest. Human analysts confirmed it was not a cloud or dust, allowing the Arizona Public Service utility to alert firefighters about the Diamond Fire. Thanks to this early detection, firefighters contained the blaze to just 7 acres, preventing a potentially catastrophic situation.

Deployment of AI Technology in Fire-Prone Regions

Arizona is not alone in this initiative. States across the Western US are rapidly deploying AI technology to combat wildfires. Arizona Public Service has installed nearly 40 AI smoke-detection cameras and plans to increase that number to 71 by summer. Meanwhile, Xcel Energy in Colorado has set up 126 cameras and aims to expand its coverage to seven states by the end of the year.

California has also implemented a network of 1,240 AI-enabled cameras through the ALERTCalifornia program. This extensive system monitors high-risk areas, ensuring that fires can be detected before they escalate. According to Neal Driscoll, a geology and geophysics professor at UC San Diego, these AI systems outperform traditional 911 calls in detecting potential fires.

California has also implemented a network of 1,240 AI-enabled cameras through the ALERTCalifornia program.

According to Patrick Roberts, a senior researcher at RAND, while AI can identify fires, it cannot determine the appropriate response. Firefighters must still decide on evacuation protocols, resource allocation, and other critical actions based on the AI’s input. For instance, Pano AI charges around $50,000 annually per camera, which includes ongoing fire risk analysis and monitoring. This expense can be a barrier for some utilities and agencies.

False alarms also pose a challenge, as they can divert resources and attention from real emergencies. According to Roberts, while AI systems can significantly reduce response times, they still require human intervention to assess the situation accurately. This reliance on human input is critical to ensuring that resources are allocated effectively and that false positives do not overwhelm emergency services.
