IITs Launch Residential Program for Renewable Energy Training

IIT Madras, Kanpur, and Bombay introduce a six-month program to equip graduates with essential skills in renewable energy systems, focusing on power electronics and industry integration.

New Initiative by IITs to Address Renewable Energy Skills Gap

India’s premier engineering institutes are stepping up to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in renewable energy. On May 5, 2026, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Bombay announced a six-month residential program aimed at training graduates and early-career professionals in renewable energy systems. This initiative comes at a crucial time as India seeks to expand its renewable energy capacity to meet climate goals and energy demands.

The program, known as the Power Electronics Finishing School, focuses on core areas such as power electronics, system integration, and control systems. Participants will engage in both academic instruction and hands-on project work, ensuring they gain practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge. Supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the ITEL Foundation, the program aims to create a robust pipeline of talent for the renewable energy sector.

Comprehensive Curriculum and Hands-On Experience

The curriculum covers essential topics in power electronics and renewable energy applications. Participants will learn about power electronics components from a design perspective, system integration, and control systems, which are vital for developing efficient energy solutions. The program also includes modules on software tools for circuit analysis and design, equipping participants with the technical skills needed in the industry.

Practical exposure is a key component of the training. Students will engage in projects involving printed circuit board design and hardware implementation, allowing them to apply classroom learning to real-world challenges. The program emphasizes understanding the thermal behavior of power circuits, critical for optimizing system performance in renewable energy systems. Collaborations with industry partners like InPhase and Statcon Energiaa further enhance the program’s relevance and applicability.
